What's the best type of computer monitor to use for streaming videos/consoles?

I want to get a big old monitor for my room, something like 24 inches. I'm just a little confused on what specifically to look at. I'm primarily going to use it to stream online videos from a smaller netbook and also for connecting my xbox, maybe something like hulu plus or netflicks eventually. I feel like LED would be better for me as opposed to LCD, but I'm not sure. Also what would be the optimal resolution? I always worked with 1600x900 but I'm seeing a lot of 1920 x 1080.
